As a child growing up rather isolated on an Iowa farm, June Van Klaveren spent many days outside playing with creatures she found. She developed a love and appreciation of all living things and actually became “friends” with many of them. She was always particularly attracted to bugs and learned that many survive without coming in contact with humans and pose no threat.
In her professional career, she helped pest control companies market their services, thus carrying over her interest in insects.
Combining her love of insects and her love of children, she has written Me & Smugg, the Bug. A Story of an Unlikely Friendship to help children understand that friendship and acceptance of those different from us is vital.
